This evening's meeting Rotarian Raouf Oderuth introduced Sally Hemmings, a native of Boston, USA, but firmly settled in England.
Sally introduced herself as a teacher and practitioner of the ancient art of Tai Chi, which has been around since before the 13th century CE. Tai-Chi was a passive form of marshal art developed in China and has followed several paths during its development.
These days it claims to be a way to help develop body, mind and spirit. The core of the art are slow but structured breathing and bodily movements. One of the benefits is to increace propriception(the awarenes of positioning of our limbs).
After Sally's interesting talk on the history and practice of Tai Chi, she invited us to join in a series of excercises, accompanied by gentle Chinese music, so we could experience Tai Chi. There was a very healthy response to Sally's invitation and she put us through a series of movement and breathing exercises lasting about 15 minutes.
Rotarian James Slinn gave a vote of thanks and commented on the pleasure Sally had brought to the evening with her enthusiasm for Tai Chi and gentle way she had introduced a class of novices to the art.
