A successful evening tour of the Factory Floor

A complete guide around the Whiteline Window facility in Eastbourne

On a damp and dark January evening eighteen intrepid Rotarians and partners headed out to the deepest recesses of Hampden Park, Eastbourne to rendezvous with Paul, Production Director of Whiteline Windows. After our initial talk we were all equipped with hi-viz vests and earplugs to commence our tour around the factory.

We started in the "goods in" store of the range of plastic extrusions used to form the frames and inserts of the windows. Paul explained that Whiteline had a market based in the south-east corner of England and were producing over 300 window units per week.

Next we went to the cutting shed and witnessed the automatic process of cutting the 6m lengths into the precise lengths required for each individual window unit. Each unit is made to exact specification so as each part comes off the cutting line it is automatically labelled to ensure it stays together with all the other components for the assembly stage.

After this we went to the colouring section to talk about the different colour options that the windows can be made and how this is achieved. After colouring the frames are assembled on a jig to hold them exactly in line before heat is applied to each joint to form the complete frame.

Our tour then followed through to the final finished products being held in the despatch bay for shipping overnight to the customers location. Throughout the visit Paul kept us informed of the wider aspects of the business, it's challenges and ambitions.

We finished the tour with a look at the main office and Paul answered a wide range of questions. James thanked Paul for his time and friendly reception to our party.

After the factory visit we headed off to The Lamb, Hooe for a delightful supper and time for chatting.
