The
highlight of this week’s meeting was a visit by Fife Young Carers. This
marvellous charity provides support and respite for the many young
people who, by force of circumstances, are obliged to care for parents
or grandparents who may be suffering from mental illness, alcohol or
drug abuse, or other debilitating illness. These children -with an
average age of around twelve- take on duties and responsibilities
normally the preserve of adults, and are very often the mainstay of very
disfunctional families. Today’s meeting was to recognise the amazing
work done by these young people. Five young carers selected by the
charity received Rotary Certificates in recognition of their
contribution to society, along with a voucher of their choice for
spending on the sort of treat they can usually only dream about. Other Club
business included a report from Douglas Jackson on the recent Rotary
Golf Week, once again a huge success with golfers from across the globe
enjoying golf and fellowship, all resulting in a generous donation of
£5267 to Parkinson’s UK Scotland. The commitment to this event by Douglas and his committee is huge and this was generously acknowledged by the members. A new member, Sue Hill, was introduced to the Club by Frank Quinault. She was warmly congratulated and welcomed by all members. Other
activities reported on included ‘The Future of Sciences Day’ and ‘The
Schools Forum’ both attended by local schools, and the scheme for the
provision of sports coaches in Zambia.
