District Young Musician Competition 2024/25

The Rotary District 1240 Young Musician competition took place on Friday 7th February, at Helena Romanes School, Great Dunmow.  Eleven young musicians from around the Rotary District took part, sponsored by Rotary Clubs from Bishop’s Stortford, Chelmsford, Colchester, Great Dunmow and Grays & Thurrock.

All the young musicians performed to high a standard. Their music ranged from J. S. Bach and F. Chopin to W. A. Mozart, and songs from Beyoncé and Sondheim to Bricusse & Newley.

From the Rotary Club of Dunmow competition, held in November 2024, three local young musicians went forward to this Rotary District 1240 competition. Thomas, who sang with his guitar and Mariia who sang a cappella, and a third song whilst playing the piano, they are both students at Helena Romanes School. The third entrant from Dunmow was Ankhan, who played the piano in the instrumentalist section.

The competition was judged by three professional musicians, James Cairns, Kate Llewellyn & Philip Sunderland, who all commented on the high standard of the young musicians.  After a long deliberation by the judges they announced that the winner of the Instrumentalist section was Amelia, from Chelmsford, who played the violin, and the runner-up was Kohana, from Bishop’s Stortford, who played the cello.  The vocalist section was won by Mariia, from Great Dunmow, and  the runner-up was Alexandra, from Chelmsford. Both Amelia and Mariia will now go forward to the Rotary Cluster final, to be held on Saturday 8th March in Chelmsford Cathedral.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Great Dunmow, Councillor Peter Childs, the Rotary District 1240 District Governor, Anne Moriaty and Peter Dowse, the District 1240 Youth Lead, and organiser of the event.

Thank you to Helena Romanes School for allowing the event to be held in their main hall, thank you to the judges, and to all our Young Musicians for taking part, and the support from their families and sponsoring clubs.
