Friday October 18 was the opportunity for us to complete the investiture of the new Quilters RotaKids at Quilters Junior School. The presentation took place in front of the whole school at its Friday afternoon Assembly, with President Patrick, Youth Officers Stephen King and Peter Greene.
The school children had all filed into the hall, chatting amongst themselves. That is, until a quiet word from Headteacher Mr. Michael Wade “Why can I hear you?” silenced them all.
Mike was his usual ebullient and dynamic self, reminding the children that the Assembly was to “celebrate greatness” and to stress the importance of high attendance - “even if you have a slight cold, still come to school or you will miss out on valuable learning opportunities". There will be a reward each term for attendance - a “Cinema Day”!
This was followed by Mike telling them that the Walk of Fame was the ultimate accolade for those who set an outstanding example, role models for exceptional acts. He then sang “Walk of Fame”, much to the childrens enjoyment!
All the children in the School Council, and thus the RotaKids Club, had been elected by their peers at school, and now came to the front so they could be presented with their School Council badges, and RotaKids badges and pledge cards, shaking hands with President Pat, Stephen and Peter.
Mike ended the assembly by complimenting the children for all they do to help the older members of the community, to act against Dementia, and visiting every cafe and community centre where old people gather.
He explained that by so doing they emulated the actions of Rotarians.
He stressed to the children that they must be kind to each other, the motto was “I am, I can, Be kind”, to love learning and embrace British values of Democracy, Mutual Respect, Tolerance and Respect for the Rule of Law.
