The local heat of the national Rotary Young Chef competition

The Hawick heat of Rotary's Young Chef competition took place at Hawick High School on Tuesday 10th December. Thirteen students, from S3 upwards, competed in what was said to be the best Young Chef competition yet!

The task was to prepare, in two hours, a two-course healthy meal comprising a main course and dessert for two people, costing less than £18.00.

Judges for the competition were Simone Falcone of Santa Marina, Trevor Ward of The Gretel, George Thorburn of Hawick Rotary, and Carol Douglas and Andy Liddell of Muirhall Energy which had generously given financial support to the competition.

After what was agreed to have been a very close contest, first place was awarded to Mackenzie Crudge (S5), and second place to Isla Gibson (S6). Sarah McLeod (S5) was highly commended.

The judges spoke warmly of the quality of the food prepared, with Carol Douglas listing specific items which had won particular praise.

Hawick Rotary's Youth Convenor Ron Smith gave a Vote of Thanks to the many people who had contributed to the success of this year's competition.

The plan is now that there will be a Borders Area Final in mid-January, in which Mackenzie and Isla will compete against representatives of other participating schools, possibly Earlston, Kelso, Langholm and Peebles.
