Walk For Health On The Gryffe Valley Way

OPENING EVENT, SUNDAY 6TH OCTOBER 2024

Sunday 06 October saw the opening ceremony of the Gryffe Valley Way, held at the River Inn in Crosslee, Houston. Walkers and runners from local community groups, plus Rotary members and those involved in the creation of the Gryffe Valley Way, attended the event.  Rotary’s Mike Farley welcomed over 100 people to the ceremony, including radio and television sports personality Steven Thompson, John Rodger (President of Scottish Athletics) and Drew McKenzie (Provost of Inverclyde). Steven, John and Drew, assisted by Renfrewshire Councillor James MacLaren and Sai Kumar (President of Gryffe Valley Rotary) cut the ribbon to officially open the Gryffe Valley Way.

Walkers and runners had converged on the River Inn for the ceremony after walking and running various sections of the Way. All walkers and runners were able to log their participation in the Gryffe Valley Way passport scheme, which offers a range of prizes for individuals who complete the Way before the end of November. More details of the Gryffe Valley Way and Passport can be found on the Gryffe Valley Rotary website and Facebook page. One young man, Harvey Calderwood, had completed the 20+ mile length of the Way earlier in the day, setting out before 6.00am! He was presented with his Certificate of Completion.

Our pictures show the ribbon cutting ceremony, some of the walkers who attended, the Bee Happy group setting out from Linwood to walk to the River Inn (litter picking on route!) and Harvey Calderwood receiving his certificate.
