Better than the Other One!

After the cancellation of the July Rotary Boot, Craft and Produce Fair due to inclement weather, the stallholders and curious crowds returned to the West Martello Field for the August Fair.

Early in the morning, a long queue formed along the Esplanade waiting for the gates to be opened at seven thirty.  The queue of eighty-five stallholders snaked its way into the field and guided by the team of Rotarians each stallholder was allocated a defined space in which to set up.

The inquisitive bargain hunters were soon exploring the myriad of stalls in their quest for value for money.

Besides the stalls selling items often found at Boot Fairs such as clothes, collectables, books, toys and jigsaws, there were a few more unusual items such as leap frogging clowns, a full size plastic scimitar, two medaille d’honneurs (very topical with the Olympics taking place in Paris), and something to be snapped up — a tiled crocodile (or maybe an alligator).

For those who like to plan well in advance, several stalls were selling Christmas decorations.

Some items appeared to be available in bulk quantities: not only was there the perennial ‘lost’ golf balls looking for an owner, but there was also a hug of teddy bears, a box of brass door handles (much polishing would be needed) and a group of four electric guitars.

Comments were made by a prospective buyer that the Fair was the best one, much better than the ‘P______e’ one!

The best comment came, however, from a stall holder who when responding to a customer who wished to buy a porcelain figure with a parasol, and asked “How will I get it home?” replied “Carefully”.
