Prestwick Rotarian Andy Mathieson gave a talk about his early police career in Ayr. He joined the police in 1963 and pounded the beat in various parts of Ayr. He told us about is adventures on the streets when all he had was a trunchion and a whistle. He eventually was given a bike to get around and had to be at certain telephone boxes at a specified time to get an update from his Sergeant. Later he upgraded his bike to a police car which made life easier to get around.
He passed around various items he used at the time like a baton, handcuffs and his police ID.
