The Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill rolls up to enjoy all the fun of Rayleigh Trinity Fair
Sunday 9th June saw the return of Rayleigh’s popular Trinity Fair. A Trinity Fair has been held in Rayleigh since 1227 when a Royal Charter allowed the villagers of Rayleigh to hold a fair on the eighth Sunday after Easter. The fair was mainly for trading livestock and farming equipment, but the following day was set aside for making merry.
In 2017 Rayleigh Town Council decided to resurrect the practice of holding a Fair at the beginning of June each year and, following the success of the first resurrected Fair have held it ever since with the exception of the years which were blighted by Covid.
The Fair is an opportunity for the residents of Rayleigh to get together with friends and families to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the Fair in Rayleigh High Street. The High Street is alive with a huge array of stalls, funfair rides, vintage car exhibits, food and drink stalls and all manner of local organisations showing off the benefits of membership.
The Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill have participated since the modern fair was resurrected in 2017 and 2024 saw the members turn up with their stall being dedicated to Jackie Wellman’s “Cuddly Toy Tombola”. Jackie’s tombola is already a popular feature of the Christmas Lights ceremony and it again proved popular at the Trinity Fair.Jackie collects cuddly toys throughout the year and prior to these evens spends a lot of time cataloguing and numbering up the toys.
On the day, the members participate in the event from the time that Roger Allen arrives with the gazebo in his van, the setting up of the stall, manning the stall throughout the day and finally the dismantling of the stall and packing it all away.
The stall was again a great success. It not only allows the members to connect with the residents of Rayleigh and demonstrate the club’s involvement in the community but, through Jackie’s hard work, it turned out to be a commercial success as well. The “Cuddly Toy Tombola” was especially popular with children and raised £647 for the club’s Charity Fund from which the club donates to many local charities and also national and international areas that require our help.
