LIGHTING OF THE BEACON -
Epsom Downs - in Commemoration of the D Day Landings in Normandy - 06 June 2024
Along with many other commemorative events across the country especially at Portsmouth and in Normandy France - Epsom Downs hosted the lighting of the Beacon along with other across the country and in Normandy France. The D Day commemoration has been widely published in the the media as it is the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings, the largest naval, air and land operation in history. Many did not make it back home and least we will remember them.
Organised by Epsom & Ewell BC, Epsom BID, Epsom & Ewell RBL with Epsom Rotary assisting with ensuring the safety of the some 2000 that attended throughout the event. Music was provided by The Epsom & Ewell Silver Band, with a choir beautifully tuning out many wartime songs, and a ceremony at the beacon with a lone piper playing the Last Post. Fish n chips were also for the takings.
Thanks to Maggie for gathering a good band of members and friends from Epsom Rotary, which meant that Epsom Rotary could be very much part of this momentous event. Some of our veterans attended as did others, one travelling from as far as Redhill. More pictures can also been seen on the attached link.
