AUTUMN CHARITY GOLF EVENT

DUMBARNIE LINKS, MONDAY 21st OCTOBER 2024

 THE ROTARY CLUB OF KILRYMONT St ANDREWS organised another highly successful Charity Golf Event played over the acclaimed DUMBARNIE LINKS on Monday 21st October 2024. . 

 It was the 22nd running of what has always proved to be a very popular event. Fortunately, Storm Ashley had passed over by Monday morning enabling a field of 100 golfers to tee off under amazingly blue skies albeit with a very strong south westerly wind leading to challenging conditions throughout the day. A welcome dram at the Social Hole coupled with a fudge doughnut donated by Past President Irene Walker provided an inner boost for the challenges of the back 9!!

 17 Rotary Clubs from 5 Districts were represented with Rotarians travelling from as far afield as Shropshire, Anwick, Dalbeattie and Ellon and others from local businesses and golf clubs.  

 Golfers competed individually for The Kilrymont Vase and The Morris Quaich and in regions for The Chesterhills Claret Jug. The Kilrymont Vase was narrowly won by Robert Gordon (9) from Aberdeen Bon Accord returning 42 stableford points from the runner- up Gordon Smith (14) from Kirkcudbright with 39 points.  The Leading Lady and winner of The Morris Quaich was Susie MacLeod (4) from Aberdeen Bon accord with 31 points. 

 The Four Ball Team Prize was won with 87 points by Kirkcudbright 2 represented by Steve Richardson, John Breckenridge, Stewart McKean & Gordon Smith.

 The Chesterhills Claret Jug is played for between groups representing England, North, Central & South of Scotland with North of Scotland, ably led by Murdo MacLeod, achieving a narrow victory over the others.

 District Governor Brian Stewart presented the above trophies and prizes along with further prizes to:   

 Susie MacLeod (4) from Aberdeen Bon Accord for the longest drive by a lady the 12^th

Gareth Winchester (9) from Ellon for the longest drive by a man at the same hole.

Robert Kennedy (11) from Dalbeattie for being nearest the hole at the 8^th 

 Andy’s prize also included the weekend use of a Mazda car supplied by Barnett’s of Dundee.

 And very big thanks must go to Jonathon Edwards - 2000 Sydney Olympic Triple Jump Gold Medalist and STILL holder of the world record holder for his sterling shift on the 8^th tee throughout the day when he challenged all 100 competitors to better his tee shot and so “Beat the Olympian”. A few were successful but still nearly £400 was raised in the process.

 Attracting over 100 Rotarians every year from all over Great Britain, The Kilrymont St Andrews Rotary Club’s Autumn Charity Golf Event has raised over £120,000 over the past 22 years for the benefit of local, national and international charities.  All told, this year’s event will have raised over £9,000 - main beneficiaries being:

• Pancreatic Cancer UK
• Mary’s Meals
• The Wave Project St Andrews (Mental Health)

 The Rotary Club of Kilrymont St Andrews is very grateful for the generous support from all the participating golfers, Dumbarnie Links and the many local businesses, golf clubs and individuals who sponsored holes and donated prizes. Their contribution makes the event not only such a successful fund raising day but also a very special day of fun and fellowship.
