ORBIS is a global charity that brings people together to fight avoidable blindness. It mentors, trains and inspires local teams to fight blindness in their own communities. “No one should live a life of unnecessary blindness, simply because of where they were born”.
It operates a McDonnell Douglas MD 10 which is fitted out with an operating theatre coupled with a fully equipped training centre. It takes ophthalmic training to eye specialists in poorer countries who typically would not be able to afford to travel for such training. Building on this, it also operates its Cybersight service which, through the power of the internet, allows the training to be accessed across the globe, enabling the training to be made available anywhere, even in remote or dangerous areas where the plane cannot be taken.
At the time Roger reported “I have met and do know some blind people, and without exception have been impressed with their attitude to everything. Now, having done the blind walk I am even more impressed as to how they have overcome their disadvantages .........and just how lucky I am to have all my senses.”
“Thank you for supporting the Orbis Walk - your contribution is certainly going to a good cause.”
He was right, the sponsorship is all in and has been counted, and it’s a total of £522.50 including Gift Aid.
We wrote to ORBIS to let them know the money was on its way, and received a letter of thanks (see below) from Fiona Lyons, Senior Fundraising Officer at ORBIS.
Fiona accompanies this formal “thank you” with the comments that “it’s amazing that the total collected now stands at over £500, that is fantastic! Thank you so much for all that you do to make the walk such a success.”
“As I have said in the past, we would really like to make a feature of the walk in one of our newsletters .... I will certainly be doing my utmost to see if the walk can go in the next one as it’s such a wonderful thing that you do on our behalf.”
back Our club contributes to the community by holding or supporting projects which encourage our young people to stretch their capabilities, and supporting projects which enrich the life of our town.
