Kenya Day Endeavours 2024

Buttsbury Junior and Infant Schools hosted a Kenya day as part of their Geography week.

Kenya Conundrum

We heard from Buttsbury Head Teacher Ann Robinson that the junior and Primary Schools were hosting a Kenya day as part of their Geography week. The schools have long had a link with Ciamanda school in Embu County, Kenya and we reported recently on Head Teacher Ann’s visit to Ciamanda (see report in our November 2023 edition).

The plan was that it would be like a day in Ciamanda school - no IT, no worksheets etc. in the morning,  Then, some beans to try for lunch. In the afternoon, it’s would be a Geography afternoon - focused on learning about Kenya.

“The children would dress up in the colours of the Kenyan flag, and the whole event would be a fundraising day for Ciamanda school. Hopefully, we’ll raise lots of money”, said Ann.

Kenya Day

Thank you to Ann for writing us the following report:
Thursday 15th February was Kenya Day at Buttsbury Infant and Junior Schools - where children had the opportunity to learn about the country and its culture. On this day, children were invited to come to school dressed in the colours of the Kenyan flag and there was also a  Kenyan offering on the school dinner menu too.
During the morning, the children experienced lessons that were delivered in the way they would be in Ciamanda School in Kenya; no IT, no worksheets - everyone sitting in rows facing the front.

In the afternoon, it was back to Buttsbury-style teaching to find out more about the geography of Kenya.
The  school hopes to raise some money on Kenya day to support the education of the children at Ciamanda, their partner school.”
