We learned a great deal about the hard work required to train up a working guide dog in five stages. Volunteers such as Moira and Ruth train the puppies in basic behaviour, such as no jumping up, and to walk on the left hand side.

Trained adult guide dogs must learn 51 different behaviour, 75% of dogs make the grade, at a cost of £55, 000 per dog over its lifetime. Managing dogs for success is the secret, rewarding dogs for good behaviour.

Rotarian dog lover Debby Broughton - Hay gave a hearty vote of thanks to Moira and Ruth for a great presentation. She also gave Hobi a well-earned dog treat for impeccable behaviour throughout. Puppy raisers are urgently required, contact guidedogs.org.uk/volunteer
