Buttsbury Junior school is home to one of our two RotaKids clubs in Billericay and links between the school and the Rotary Club of Billericay are close and very friendly.
The school has an ECO group of children which is driving ecological initiatives within the school (and also with their parents!!). We were invited by this group to help with a litter pick around the school grounds and we gladly accepted the invitation.
The date was set for the afternoon of October 12 and eight of us: Roger, Sarah, Patrick, Stephen, Malcolm, Michael, Les and Peter joined the children at the school. There were ten children, including the five officers of the RotaKids, led by Deputy Head Adam Graves.
After an initial briefing we split into four pairs of Rotarians and two or three children assigned to each pair. These four teams were equipped with litter pickers and rubbish bags, and dispersed to different areas of the school grounds. Roger and Sarah to the front, Patrick and Peter to the rear entrance and Mill Hill Drive, and Michael and Malcolm, and Les and Stephen, to opposite corners of the school field.
Thank fully the children's eyesight was so much better than ours, and we were astonished at the amount of items we found, many many cigarette stubs, cardboard, discarded empty crisp packets, plastic, paper, even two China mugs!
Job done, the four large bags of collected detritus were disposed of and the litter pickers, safety vests and safety gloves collected in.
Afternoon over? No. Suitably satisfied with a job well done, it was time for tea and we were all invited into the classroom where the children served is Tea - coffee or Tea, with biscuits and cake. We sat on the soft chairs while the children served us and then sat around the table with soft drinks and biscuits. Their behaviour and the way they helped each other was most impressive.
Deputy Head Adam Graves complimented the children on their endeavours and the Rotary Club for giving up our time to help out. Peter Greene responded for our club that we were delighted to help and were so impressed by the work of the ECO group and the way they had conducted themselves that day.
Well done Buttsbury! Thank you for asking us to help you.
