August Boot, Craft and Produce Fair

The sky of the morning of Sunday 6th August was a cloudless blue when 66 stallholders arrived to open up their vehicles to prepare to display their wares for sale.

One stall holder, however, considered it to windy to display clothes on a rack for sale and within half an hour had packed up and left the remaining 65 stallholders to await the public searching for bargains.

Many had, however, wondered whether Storm Antoni which inundated Seaford on the Saturday would prevent the August Boot, Craft and Produce Fair taking place.  Despite the rain, the pitch marking on the Saturday had taken place in the morning, and so the response to the many queries on Facebook on Saturday was ’Yes, the weather forecast is good for tomorrow’.

Any possible reticence of the pubic due to the storm was however not apparent as the Martello Field was soon filled with inquisitive bargain hunters, and as a result many of the stallholders confirmed that they were doing a good trade.

At Boot Fairs there are some items commonly found on several stalls and some uniquely for sale on one stall.  These latter included a jacket of a member of the Border Troop of the German Democratic Republic (Grenztruppen der DDR), a navy issue suitcase, a knitted purple owl and a very doleful looking large stuffed toy dog.

Surprisingly given that the Fair was being held in August there was a significant number of stalls selling Christmas decorations such as a selection of various sized pink baubles, several toy Santa's, wreaths, julgransbelysning utomhus (Christmas tree outdoor lights) and lichterketten für außen (external fairy lights), as well as a pair of red nosed reindeer slippers!

As a result of the Fair nearly £700 was raised which will be used to support local charitable and international Rotary projects.
