Alan's civilian guns

Prestwick Rotarians were treated to a very enjoyable and informative talk from club member Allan Dunlop.
He showed his collection of civilian pistols, including a blunderbuss and a cavalry carbine for the first time in public. The weapons are all from the 18th to 19th Century, when unlike today the middle classes were quite commonly armed with concealed firearms.
There was no gun control then, and civilians used them to protect property. Defending property was good, and in doing so, anyone using a gun, to maim or kill, was invariably acquitted. Mass shootings never happened, because guns were incapable of firing at speed.
Allan has a great ability to put weaponry into a historical/social context. It makes his talks very enjoyable and informative. Pictures show Allan and his civilian guns. Mike Kelly gave him a well-deserved vote of thanks.
