This is Elizabeth Anderson’s entry submitted by Penrith Club judged as Senior 1st. Title is Penrith Town Hall.
We believe that Elizabeth is now through to the national final later in the year.
‘For the photo I submitted I was inspired by the local architecture of Penrith, Cumbria. The building in my photograph is Penrith Town Hall. I angled myself diagonally from the building and used an eye level shot, looking upwards, to catch every detail the architecture offers. I also used the shadows and light to split the composition of the image into thirds. This shows a perfect gradient fading into the image, to create an eye-catching piece’.
Elizabeth’s statement shows she has carefully observed the architectural style of this building and set out to capture the detail in part of a very large and imposing building. The camera angle chosen leads the viewer’s eye to the embellishments used by the builder which are captured in excellent detail. Elizabeth uses the composition technique of light and shadow to expose the detail to great effect. The sunlight on the building shows how the building stone colour appears in shadow and well lit areas. This image demonstrates Elizabeth’s competence as a photographer.
