On the evening of 7th March 2023, the Rotary Club of Llandudno hosted a most engaging talk at the Maesdu Golf Club. Rae Lewis outlined the proposed 2024 #LASTPOLE expedition to the least accessible point in the Arctic. The talk was attended by 17 Rotarians and friends.

The #LASTPOLE expedition is supported by Sir Ranulph Fiennes and David Attenborough, and aims to drill for ice core samples to study the changing environment. The team also seeks to learn more about polar bear numbers and habits, and measure the presence of plastics in the Arctic Ocean. The expedition will compose 28 members, all of whom are to be funded by volunteers, sponsors, and donors. https://tinyurl.com/GoFundMe-RaeLewis

Rae spoke also of the training and team-building that he saw as being in some ways as important as the expedition itself, in that without it no expedition could ever take place. For illustration and by way of light relief, Rae drafted four unsuspecting Members to give an impromptu demonstration of how they would ward off a curious polar bear! We will never know if it would have worked!

Rtn. Philip Jones gave a vote of thanks to Rae Lewis for sharing his upcoming adventure experience with the club. The talk was a great success, and everyone left feeling inspired and motivated to do more for the environment
