Guest speaker Steven Brown [left] ,with Prestwick Rotarian Steven Cooper, treated us to a talk on the history of trade unions. Steven is a seasoned trade union negotiator, who set about dispelling the many myths about the trade union movement.
The Trade Union Congress was formed in 1860, to represent workers in the newly industrialised society. New Lanark is an example of how industrial workers rights were recognised, including those of women workers.
Trade Unions over time
became politically stronger, but made mistakes, including the winter of discontent, leading to the three day week, and the very damaging miners strike, under Arthur Scargill. Trade Unions have adapted, and we now have 'Trade Union Officials' not 'Shop Stewards' .
Steven came across as a very reasonable guy, well able to sensibly resolve a dispute. His talk was interesting and informative. Donald Cuthbertson gave a vote of thanks.
