FTSE 100 Competition Results week 1

Results for week ending 10th February 2023

Week_One_Results.pdf

At the start of the week the FTSE 100 fell back from Friday’s record high caused by a dent in confidence for the recent recovery in trading.

On Tuesday the FTSE 100 was lifted back up as investors poured money into BP after the oil giant unveiled bumper profits which it plans to pass on - around 4.4 billion dollars - to shareholders in a full-year dividend.

BP turned out to be the best performer of the week, it’s 15.9% gain taking its share price to its highest level since January 2020.  Shell shares also saw decent gains on the back of these numbers as well as a rebound in oil prices.

The FTSE 100 made gains on Wednesday but retreated after hitting an all-time record during a morning rally lifted by optimism that the UK could avoid recession this year after a report by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

As a result, it rose as high as 7,934.3 points to pass the previous peak it reached on Friday.  However, it drifted back slightly after a cautious opening for US markets before strong gains next day as it was buoyed by positive sessions for multinationals such as AstraZeneca and Standard Chartered.

Having started the week at 7,901.8 followed by three successive days of new all-time highs, the FTSE 100 finished the week at 7,882.45 as it proved unable to escape the enveloping gloom which caused most stock markets to struggle to make headway this week.

Best performers this week were as follows:-
BP plc +15.2%
Standard Chartered +7.9%
Airtel Africa plc +7.8%
AstraZenica +7.7%
Shell +5.2%
Centrica +3.0%

Poorest performers this week were:-

Entain -17.4%
Ocado Group -14.0%
Smurfit Kappa -10.7%
Mondi plc -9.0%
Scottish Mortgage -7.9%
Glencore plc -7.6%

Our most popular choice, BAE Systems made a modest 0.5% gain.

Well done to our first week leaders Ian & Freya Pettigrew. They are followed by Robbeath, Neil Spriddle, Steve McLaren and Crispy Crumble. Only 13 of our 49 entrants made gains however.

At the other end of the table Jennifer Grieve is our first to claim last place with Smellthecoffee and Tom P just slightly better off.

Early days of course but plenty to look out for in the coming weeks.
