On the 7th February 2023, the Rotary Club of Llandudno held an evening event at the Maesdu Golf Club in Llandudno. The event featured a talk by Cllr Emily Owen, who is the Deputy Leader of Conwy CBC. A total of 16 Rotarians and partners/friends plus three guests attended the event.
Cllr. Cathy Augustine was a guest and colleague of Cllr. Owen, while Paul Williams, the General Manager of Llandudno Pier, was a guest of Rtn. Mike Perry. During the talk, Cllr. Owen spoke about her backstory of working at a foodbank and subsequently a Calais refugee camp, as well as her successful election to Conwy CBC for a year in 2016 and then again in 2022 and her role as the Parliamentary Labour Candidate in 2017 and 2019.
Cllr. Owen spoke about her role as the leader of her party on the council and her party's coalition with Independents and Plaid Cymru. She also shared insight into her election as the Deputy Leader of the Council in May 2022 and her focus to date on housing and regulation, specifically addressing the growing homelessness issue, the budgetary crisis, and the search for innovative ways of dealing with these issues.
On behalf of the Club, Rtn. Chris Drew thanked Cllr. Owen for her insightful and engaging talk. The evening was a huge success, providing Rotarians with a rare opportunity to hear from a local leader and gain a deeper understanding of the important work being done in their community.
