Successful Wrap Up Collection in Witney

Witney Rotarians have supported Wrap Up UK for the first time

John Summers, Witney Rotary, 25th November 2022

Wrap-Up UK is an annual project run by Rotary Clubs working in partnership with Hands On London. The only aim is to collect coats for distribution to charities supporting people in the UK struggling to keep warm during winter. These are mostly homeless people. The Wrap Up organisation has grown rapidly since 2018, despite Covid:

2018      2021
clubs involved 7 52
volunteers 52 254
charities helped    10 121
items collected 2,300 27,600

This year was an project just for the club, collecting garments from Rotarians, friends and family. The collection specified garments that are:

In good condition and wearable.

- Heavy or light,
- Men’s, women’s, youth’s, children’s,
- Gillets and hoodies.

It was very successful and we persuaded donors to delve into their wardrobes to find items that they haven’t worn for some time. Collection took place over a two week period during mid November, allowing us enough time to plan.

We used Wrap Up collection boxes, with linings, and then packed donations by garment type. All the collateral equipment needed was obtained from Wrap Up UK at a nominal cost, making the process extremely smooth. Our donated garments were sent to Emmaus Oxford whom we had identified as a suitable local charity who were very keen take our donations.

In total, the Club collected 49 items, in the following categories:

female   male    total
heavy 11 8 19
light 7 9 16
gilet
2 2
scarves/gloves

total

49

Considering the success of the project this year, the Club will give serious consideration to expanding the project across all of Witney during 2023.
