Fiona explained that Global Sight Solutions was registered with the charity commission back in the 1994 by members of Guildford Rotary Club, the aim being to work with Rotary Clubs in the developing world and together establish financially sustainable eye hospitals which can provide a full range of eye care, free to the world’s poorest. The first hospital opened in 1998 with a further 27 enabled by 2011. Since 2011 a further 50+ have since opened.
It is 100% a Rotary charity and, by virtue of the work it does, falls into one of the seven Rotary Foundation areas of focus and can therefore obtain generous grants to help with financing its projects.
The treatments provided include cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachment at hospitals which are established by Global Sight Solutions, with the charity also providing training of eye surgeons and support staff.
Fiona identified that between 350 million and 650 million people worldwide in the less developed world are too poor to access eye treatment.
