Llandudno Soroptimists
Llandudno Rotarians and their friends dined at Maesdu Golf Club on Tuesday 1st November and afterwards the audience of 16 heard Soroptimists Pat Kerfoot and Celia Blomeley give their talk to the Club about the Llandudno Soroptimists and the work they do.
Founded 100 years ago (their centenary inspired the presentation of a bench and two trees to the town’s Happy Valley Park) the Soroptimists have had a presence in the UK for 80 years, Soroptimists seek to support women and girls globally and have a proud track record of doing that in abundance.
There are 34 Members in and around Llandudno, and their strength enables them to engage in activities as widespread as
Ø Getting aid to Chernobyl Children and also hosting children (pre-pandemic). The Soroptimists are hosting a jewellery stall in November, over Llandudno Extravaganza Weekend, to raise further funds for the Chernobyl Children. Have YOU got any jewellery to donate? Or are you looking to buy jewellery in the run-up to Christmas?. They also collect and donate books for the long-running fundraiser bookstall fair at Tesco’s, Prestatyn..
Ø Helping Ukrainian families in UK. Soroptimists assist at the clothes bank, based in Rhiw road, Colwyn Bay, as well as looking out for good second hand clothing donations. Anyone can leave donations at Holy Trinity Church.
Ø Helping in the fight against Modern Slavery. In part this involves going round the town’s hotels annually, to inform staff about modern slavery. Signs to watch out for, in particular, are the modern scourge of pop-up brothels.
Ø Supporting women’s refuge and their outreach work, including Christmas presents for the children there; again, maybe YOU can help?
Llandudno Soroptimists are set to stride into 2023 with confidence to achieve yet more for women and girls - anywhere where they are currently getting a raw deal.
