Moldova support

Club support for Moldova

Thanks to the generosity of the people of Diss, we have recently raised £15,000 for Ukrainian refugees. Diss and District Rotary club (in partnership with Diss and Waveney Rotary Club) were able to send the funds directly to Rotary clubs who could help directly. The Chișinău Rotary club in Moldova was an existing connection our club already had (as we were supporting them to provide bikes to disadvantaged families) and using this link we were able to get the fund directly to support the Ukraine refugees as they crossed the border into Moldova when fleeing the war.

As is the normal spirit of Rotary worldwide, we were delighted but not surprised to receive a lovely gift of some top quality Moldavian wine from the Chișinău Rotary club - the picture above is of us toasting our friends in Moldova and wishing them well in their continued support of the Ukrainian crisis.

We were keen to continue to support anyone trying to relieve the suffering in Ukraine as a result of the war and another opportunity recently presented itself....

Eamon Lambert, recently appointed club secretary, introduced the club to a very engaging speaker call Brian Earley a few weeks ago. Brian used to be a doctor and talked to us about the work he has been doing to provide donations of medical suppliers to Ukraine for years (way before the war) - Brian is very persuasive and has been hugely successful getting support from anyone who he feels is in a position to help - that included Diss and District Rotary club and we were not slow in jumping at the opportunity... As you can see from the picture below, Brian had managed to get lots of emergency medical packs and other supplies, a fire lorry and willing crew to drive to Ukraine - but they had not fuel money and we know the cost of that at the minute! We were able to quickly donate £1500 from our charity fund for the fuel and several of our members were pleased to turn up on the morning to send them on there way.
