Bill McKinlay and Ron Ireland of South Ayrshire Paths Initiative [SAPI] treated us to a 'double act' talk on two projects related to 'active travel' in South Ayrshire. 'Active travel' is going places by foot, bike or wheelchair. The projects discussed were The Alloway Railway Tunnel, and The Culzean Way.

Bill McKinlay updated us on upgrading The Alloway Tunnel as an arts venue, using a variety of initiatives, such as student support from Ayrshire College [ www.allowaytunnel.org.uk]. Ron Ireland described how The Culzean Way intends to create an active travel path from Ayr to Girvan, using, where possible, the redundant railway line, closed in 1968.
Both these projects are ambitious undertakings, which will involve many stakeholders, and significant finance. However steady progress is being made, and the outcomes will be fantastic for South Ayrshire.
Prestwick Rotarian Gregor Purdie underlined the importance of 'active travel' in his enthusiastic vote of thanks, for an entertaining and informative evening. The picture shows Gregor on the right, with Ron Ireland left, and Bill McKinlay centre. SAPI has a website www.southayrshirepaths.org.uk.
