The speaker at the meeting of Kendal Rotary on 5th September was Caroline Howsley of Cumbria Deaf Association who gave us an update on the state of the charity. Caroline is deaf herself with only about 40% hearing in one ear only. She took over as General Manager in 2020 and it has been a difficult two years due to numerous factors, the pandemic, the flooding of the building and recently two break-ins to the Kendal Centre which caused a lot of damage. Despite this they are pushing forward with ambitious plans and providing many services for the deaf, not least in providing sign language classes and providing the only deaf interpreters in Cumbria.
