Prestwick resident Julie Twadell gave an inspired talk on 'Dementia Friendly Prestwick', Julie is a founding member of Dementia Friendly Prestwick, which has grown from small beginnings, organising short walks. It is now a busy meeting centre, based at the RAFA Club in Prestwick.
The meeting centre model originated in Holland over 30 years ago, and was created to remove the stigma of dementia, and support the whole family.
The RAFA Club has many activities, including walking, body busting bingo, arts and crafts, music and quizzes. Meeting centres like this, if properly funded, are the way forward in dealing with the increase in dementia, predicted as the population ages. Julie is passionate about increasing awareness of, and helping society embrace the issues created by dementia, and reminded us that next month is 'dementia awareness month.'
Mike Kelly gave Julie a well-deserved vote of thanks for a passionate, informed presentation. Julie is shown here with President Andrew Mathieson.
