COMMUNITY PROJECT

To green the southern end of Portland Road.

Recently, our club attended a Zoom meeting with Karen Hoyland of Trees for Streets, which is currently working with Croydon Council on a project in Portland Road, see details below.

Trees for Streets, the National Street Tree Sponsorship Scheme, not only helps local authorities raise funding for tree planting by hosting and promoting local tree sponsorship schemes, but also helps councils work with their local communities.

This is a not-for-profit enterprise run by the charity, Trees for Cities, supported by the civic design and delivery agency, Start with Local.

The Trees for Streets project is funded by DEFRA and City Bridge Trust. It is also supported by Mayor of London.

More Trees for Portland Road!

Local community group, People for Portland Road, has embarked on an ambitious project to green the southern end of Portland Road.

Portland Road is a busy road with heavy traffic, and so suffers from some of the usual issues such as noise and pollution.

  • absorb pollution
  • capture carbon dioxide and produce oxygen
  • add colour and interest to our streets
  • provide food and shelter for insects and birds

People for Portland Road is working with Trees for Streets treesforstreets.org,
So far, enough money has been raised to plant 11 of the 16 planned trees – so the campaign is more than halfway there.

Their vision is to plant 16 new street trees along Portland Road between Belmont Road and Harrington Road, where the pavements are wider.

Can you help?

Street trees do so much for us:improve the quality of the air we breathe

Research also shows that having trees around improves our health and wellbeing, both physical and mental.

Who’s involved?

a national charity project aiming to increase the number of trees in urban areas, and Croydon Council who will plant and maintain the trees.

The overall fundraising target is £13,600.

Let’s help give this campaign a boost, and make Portland Road greener for everyone!

Please help and donate what you can!
