Headteacher Anne Robinson told our Newsletter: “It is the first time a monarch has celebrated a platinum jubilee, so we have been immersing ourselves in the history of the Queen and her reign. Each year-group planned a range of activities and the children enjoyed the opportunity to work with different teachers as well on activities outside of our normal curriculum.
“Year 3 mainly focused on the Jubilee and the queen’s reign since 2010 and have demonstrated their creativity by designing crowns, creating toys for the royal baby and designing commemorative plates.”
“Year 4 showed great enthusiasm for the 1970s and 1980s dance tutorial, which, unsurprisingly, has been one of our favourite celebration activities (I think one of the favourites for some of our support staff too)!
They have also designed commemorative stamps, written a news report in the style of Newsround in the 1970s and created a new outfit for the queen to wear.”
“Year 5 classes focused on the 1990s and early 2000s, writing speeches, drawing portraits of the queen and trying to recreate the Changing of the Guard, although a lot of the children struggled to do so and keep a straight face. I am not sure any of us are ready to become Beefeaters just yet! “
Anne has told us how year 6 focused on the Queen’s reign in the 1950s and 1960s, so spent time looking at the coronation. They listened to music played during the coronation and learnt more about the events that took place. The children enjoyed designing an outfit for the queen based on 1950s fashion too.
On Thursday’s activity morning, they worked with different children from across the whole school on a project centred around ‘A River of Hope’ to celebrate the Queen’s love and respect for the natural environment. “Each group took a different approach, with some creating poems, artwork, music as well as some groups planting seeds in the outdoor area. As if the week was not jammed pack enough, there was also an Inter House quiz, all based on the Jubilee."
The children topped off their celebration with their own ‘Street Party’ on the school field, with a picnic lunch and outdoor party hosted by Skittleman.
“My thanks to all the teachers for planning such a fun and creative week- a wonderful way to finish the half term.”
