Back To School And Still Losing At Games!

Members will be well aware of our involvement with the Quilters Pen Pals project where the children write to “older” Pen Pals to keep them “in touch” over the Covid  pandemic.

As project leader and Volunteer at Quilters,  Maureen Lee explained: “The response from the children and their Pen Pals has been fantastic and the letters back and forth have given everyone a bit of joy”.

We had to forfeit Maureen’s invitation to join the Pen Pals in a games afternoon on June 6 because this Monday event clashed with our regular club meeting, but, in the absence of Youth Chairman Mike Sinclair, Peter Greene was able to go along to the music afternoon on June 9, joining pupils from every year and approximately ten older “pen pals” in the Junior School main hall.

Tea And Cakes

As each pen pal arrived, they were greeted by a pupil and shown to a chair and table where they were offered refreshments - tea or coffee plus biscuits and/or cake.  (Peter was grateful he was initially mistaken for a “pen pal” and offered tea and cake – and very nice it was too!)

With a full house and cake-satisfied stomachs the school choir of approx. 40 entertained all with a terrific concert – it really was of the very highest quality.  A credit to their teacher and all the children taking part.  Peter was quietly enjoying the concert when he was unexpectedly embarrassed by being called upon address the assembly – a few words (Believe that if you will!)

Applause All Round

Totally unprepared (if you say so, Peter), the arrangements for the day and the singing were so good that it was not difficult to say how much he had enjoyed the afternoon and praise the outstanding performance of the choir, ending with an enthusiastic round of applause for the choir from all present.

But to compound his embarrassment (Come on, you know you loved it all!), humiliation was to follow!  The pupils had arranged some games they wanted to play with their pen pals.  Bingo, Connect4, drafts, dominoes etc.  Peter’s host wanted him to join in. Two games of Connect4, and two games of dominoes followed.  And in all them, Peter crashed to an ignominious defeat by his seven year old host!
