Lunchtime Meeting - 12:45pm - Speaker James Bond - A Life in Broadcasting

James Bond has come to the rescue in many a cinema over the years - and now he's sweeping in to save the day for film-lovers in Oswestry.

But rather than 007 zooming in in his Aston Martin, it's Oswestry's former BBC radio presenter of the same name who is helping ensure that the town's film society will continue to screen movies in the future amid fears the town's Kinokulture cinema may close.

The Oswestry Film Society, which runs parallel to but separately from the town's under-threat Kinokulture cinema, is continuing.

Michael Hudson and Tom Brookes started the Film Society in 2015, and they are supporting the new management.

James Bond explains that he wants to ensure that the big screen experience can still be enjoyed by Oswestrians.

He said: “I and others want to ensure that the big screen experience can still be enjoyed.

"We will continue to show a wide range of films, from classics to ones that missed the boat, from one’s people want to see and ones perhaps that they didn't know they wanted to see.

"And it will be democratic, anyone can have their say in suggesting films that we put on."

Films will be shown at 7.30pm on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, starting on January 17, 2023, with 'Erin Brockovich', for which the lead character Julia Roberts won the 2001 Oscar for Best Actress.

The second film on February 7th will be the gripping 2020 Kevin Costner courtroom and family drama Let Him Go.

Bond added: "We will continue to show films at Kinokulture for as long as we can, but I am also looking at alternative and additional venues for the future.

"The main thing though is for people to enjoy big screen performances. There's something special about sitting in a proper seat and revelling in the all-round cinema experience.

"And anyone who wants to get involved needs just simply to get in touch. The more film-lovers we have together, the better."

The Oswestry Film Society will remain a not-for-profit organisation, with all income going into booking films and venue overheads.

Other films will be published shortly on the Oswestry Film Society website, through which tickets can be bought for performances.
