Just four trading days this week and the FTSE 100 index closed at 7387.94 having opened on Tuesday at 7544.55. It was a good week for those investing in BP and Shell but not so good for others.

BP led the FTSE 100 after it notched up its highest quarterly underlying profits for more than a decade thanks to rocketing oil and gas prices. Across the Channel, the situation was fluid as EU investors also digested the trading bloc’s plan to ban Russian oil exports.

Retail stocks suffered ahead of the Bank of England inflation forecasts, while Cabinet ministers also said shoppers should look to buy value products in order to manage their household finances amid the surging cost of living.

Shell announced its first-quarter profits reached a record high thanks to the soaring price of oil and gas.

At £7.2 billion, underlying earnings were higher than expected, close to three times better than the same period a year ago.

Only 13 of the FTSE 100 made gains this week.
