Career talk

Prestwick Rotarians were treated to a career talk from one of their own - Dennistoun born Dr Jim Bruce. Jim gave an informative amusing summary of his professional career as a microbiologist, starting with his degree and Phd in Glasgow, which involved a study of yeasts in our oceans.

After a spell as a lecturer at Strathclyde University, he joined the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture in Belfast. He managed to stay out of trouble during the troubles, and was persuaded by Dr Selwyn Baines, the Head of the Microbiology Department at Auchincruive, Ayr, to return to Scotland in 1980. He spent many happy, productive years at Auchincruive helping the farming industry deal with a variety of microbiological problems related to milk, meat, and associated products.

Jim had a raft of stories to tell, and these were appreciated by the audience. Kate Sweeny gave a well-deserved vote of thanks.
