Duelling and Weaponry

Prestwick Rotarian Allan Dunlop gave an inspired talk on duelling and weaponry. He treated us to a raft of stories and anecdotes on the social context of duelling, and the associated codes of honour. By 1750, holster pistols were the favoured weaponry for duellists.

Calling a gentleman a 'scoundrel' was sufficient to instigate a duel, and reputations for bravery were made on the back of duelling. In Ireland especially, duelling became almost a 'national mania'. In 1844 articles of war outlawed duelling, assisted by subsequent Victorian morality.

Allan showed weapons from his own collection, including an especially rare carbine dated 1778, of which only six were ever made. Allan's enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, early firearms is infectious. His talk deserved a hearty round of applause, followed by a sincere vote of thanks from Adnan Soojeri.
