OK, the Bonds did not exactly set the world alight at Christmas. Eighty two questions set by Roger “Mastermind” Kettle in his second Club’s Christmas Fun Quiz Initiative to raise monies “Towards the Eradication of Polio from the World.” It may have been too much turkey or that extra glass after lunch but, when push came to shove, we managed just 68 correct answers (well 69 actually but see later). And that despite spending time having a go individually and without cheating before joining festive forces.
Having a former teacher, a four pass A-level student (albeit 70 years ago), two intelligent sons and daughters-in-law and two University graduated grandsons on board that should have made it a doddle. Angst all round!
The Greenes, we’re reliably told, hit a score in the Seventies. Obviously, something to go with the Dubai air at Christmas or the fact they never miss a pub quiz. Well done the Greenes! We scored heavily on “specialist subjects”, film titles, missing middle word and famous dogs, but lost some points on palindromes and foundered on “General Knowledge” - the imperial units, A,B,C of distances and totals and, needless to say, did not need the tie-break.
We would have failed that too!
Peter and Wendy tell their grizzly tale of catching Covid in Dubai elsewhere in these pages, but it seemed to have done nothing to detract from their total enjoyment of spending Christmas with daughter Helen, son-in-law Richard and, of course grandson Barnaby. Combined experienced quiz minds, not least two of whom have taught as far away as China and in such a remote island as St Helena. Unfair competition?
Peter told Newsletter: “We had a great time working together to solve the questions. Our favourites were the Palindromes, Missing Vowels, Cryptic Towns and Cryptic Film Titles.”
To the nitty-gritty. Roger earlier reported that, as at December 9, 2021, with the help of Gift Aid and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation tripling of all donations to End Polio Now, an approximate total of over £6000 had been raised. But we were looking for an increase through the later charitable Global Giving initiative. We now have that final figure – nearly $9000, equivalent to over a whopping £6700! At the UNESCO estimated cost of a jab at between US12c and 19c, this could be as many as over 74,000 vaccination doses.
All this on the weekend when one of the last two wild polio-endemic countries, Pakistan, reports it had no child paralyzed by the wild poliovirus. A polio-free world is within our grasp.
“Thank you all so much for your support, “says Roger. “I hope you enjoyed the quiz and you can now review the answers previously circulated and shown below.”
NB: Even the best of quiz masters don’t get everything right. As Roger explains: “My apologies for a typo in Question 6 in the Measure for Measure sector, imperial units. The figure given was 1210 yards. There are 4840 yards in an acre, so those who said 1210 yards is just a quarter of an acre are correct. Well done to anyone who spotted the error.” Hands up.
Ed’s note: Bert wasn’t sure but Collins Dictionary confirms that this area is also called a Rood (perhaps Olde English). I am claiming it as correct to make my total 69,
… so there!”
