Deltiology – what’s that?
On Tuesday 16th November a clutch of 12 hungry and adventurous Llandudno Rotarians and friends were on a 30 mile mission to visit the new Jamaican-style eatery “Up a Yard” in Holywell and were not disappointed!
“Up a Yard” opened recently as a facility of the Holywell Arts and Crafts Mill and is a collaboration between Sarah’s Coffee and the Mill (The ‘Sarah’ in ‘Sarah’s Coffee’ is Sara Kennedy-Ratcliffe, one of our Members)

After the meal, the guests were treated to a lavishly illustrated demonstration of the art of Deltiology. The speaker, local historian Brian Bennett, explained that this is the study and collection of postcards
He outlined the rise and fall of the culture of sending holiday postcards to friends and the whole industry it generated, when postage cost a ha’penny ( 0.021p approx.) and the card was delivered to the other end of the UK on the same day
To a historian such as Brian, it is so important that this industry existed. In an age when a camera plus the cost of buying and developing films was beyond the reach of most people, postcards have preserved for posterity records of thousands of long-since disappeared landmarks and vignettes of everyday life
Rtn. David Lea thanked Brian for his talk and we in turn thank each of David, Speaker Brian and Proprietor Charlotte and her staff for a great evening
back Blood Bikes Wales is the eye-catching name for a group of dedicated volunteers who come together as a registered charity to transport blood and other urgently needed medical material from one NHS base in Wales to another
