War Memorial Centenary

October 16 was the 100 year anniversary of the Billericay War Memorial

For Trevor: Remembering Them – 100 Years On

Let those who come after, see that these are not forgotten.

Members will recall that our esteemed Past President and chairman of the Town Council, Trevor Stansfield, was a long time supporter of the Billericay War Memorial and never ceased his efforts to have it regularly maintained and looking at its best.  As he put it, to give due reverence and thanks to those who gave their lives for us.

Trevor would have been delighted to see that Saturday October 16, 2021 marked the centenary of this War Memorial here in Billericay.  It was erected to commemorate the sixty-two who lost their lives in WWI, and its public dedication took place on October 16, 1921.  After WWII, a further fifty-four names were added in a separate panel.

The Centenary was marked by the display of the two “Here But Not Here” statues (one of which was fully funded by this club) a guard of honour of WWI soldiers, and an accompanying free exhibition in the Chantry Centre and St. Mary Magdalen Church that Saturday where tea/coffee and cakes were available.

Those taking part in the exhibition included the Royal British Legion, 10th Essex Living History Group, The Cater Museum, Billericay History Archive, Ken’s model Aircraft of the Great War and the Western Front Association (Essex Branch).
