2021 Haiti Earthquake Relief
West Fife Rotarians have donated £500 to Haiti Help to assist recovery after two natural disasters in two days in the Republic of Haiti.
On 14th August 2021, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck the Tiburon Peninsula on Haiti. Then that was followed by a direct hit from Tropical Depression Grace overnight on 16th August.
The Rotary Club have chosen to lend their support through a West Fife based charity, Haiti Help, which was formed after three nurses from Fife, Carole Hatten, Elaine Stark and Lou Davidson volunteered to go to the island of La Gonave in Haiti to help immunise children in 2009.
Although they were expecting to see poverty, the nurses were shocked at the severely deprived conditions they encountered, particularly in the local Children’s Home. Their charity has provided valuable assistance ever since.Lou Davidson from Haiti Help said:-
“We will be extremely happy to pass on the donation of £500 to the Haitian medical team from the hospital on La Gonave. They have gone to the earthquake affected area and are in dire need of supplies. This money will enable them to purchase much needed dressings, painkillers and antibiotics as well as pay to transport the more badly injured to nearby hospitals.” West Fife Rotary have followed the advice from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy who state that as with most disasters, cash donations are recommended as they allow for on-the-ground agencies to direct funds to the greatest area of need, support economic recovery and ensure donation management does not detract from disaster recovery needs.Here is a link to Haiti Help donation platform.
