Talking about The Theatre Shed, Emily described the inclusive activity where any young person could join, irrespective of background, ability and where the young people aim to stage thought provoking shows – typically two or three times a year, which they have developed themselves in workshops. For example, one such show was loosely based on Alice in Wonderland with the script reflecting their own life experiences. Recently The Theatre Shed had a sell-out show at the Elgiva, Chesham’s municipal theatre. The positive impact of the experience on young people with communication difficulties performing on stage in front of an audience was just reward for the commitment made by supporters and participants.

The Theatre Shed have continued to support young people during the pandemic with zoom workshops and local professional comedians giving freely of their time to mentor young people develop skills and personal awareness.   Theatre Shed has now taken on an allotment to provide young people the opportunity to grow vegetables and acquire knowledge whilst enjoying working together.

Emily has been Town Mayor previously and described the role as being a figurehead, chairing Town Council meetings and generally promoting the positive development of Chesham. Always keen to hear ideas from the community although Emily cautioned that the mayor doesn’t have the scope of powers which many people expect!  

A lively discussion followed in which the difference between the French role of Town Mayor was explored along with other topics bearing on the scope of responsibilities of, and communications between, Town and Buckinghamshire Council authorities.
