A talk via Zoom by Andrew Gibson on Chichester Ship Canal Trust
Andrew gave a very interesting and informative talk about CSCT and the history of the Chichester Ship Canal.
Andrew’s obvious extensive subject research resulted in a fascinating story of the life of the “Waterway of Woe” detailing many of its notable events over the last 200 years.
We learned of the successes and failures (many financial) of those involved in the development of the canal.
Indeed, at present, a major fund raising exercise is underway to allow for the extensive renovations required.
The talk concluded with a lovely bird’s eye drone trip over the canal whilst Andrew explained about the many leisure trips and activities that take place on the canal; albeit currently greatly reduced as a result of the pandemic.
We heard of past charming tea party trips and elaborate and exciting Father Christmas trips for the children which, having been on hold for a couple of years, are planned to be reinstated as soon as permitted.
The annual charity fund raising “Dragon Boat Race” had to be cancelled last year and there are hopes for a revival this year.
It will be M&P’s aim in 2022 or 2023 to enter a team to compete in the race!
Andrew was warmly thanked for his well-presented and absorbing talk.
