It was an up-and-down week for the FTSE 100, which is still languishing just below the 7,000 point mark, which it breached for the first time in 15 months earlier in April.
The last two weeks have seen the FTSE 100 take a bit of a pause, and ended our contest period at 6969.81 down 0.5% on the week. The week had a big impact on most of our entrants with 73 out of the 115 making losses.
This week after positive earnings, shares of Standard Chartered Bank made the biggest gain (+8.3%). Next best were HSBC Holdings (+8.1%), Intermediate Capital (+6.8%), Lloyds Banking (+6.6%) and BT Group (+6.4%).
Largest drops were made by previous gainers - AVEVA Group (-11.5%), Fresnillo (-7.8%), Polymetal Int (-7.5%), Ocado Group (-6.2%) and Just Eat Takeaway (-6.0%). Only 47 of the 100 made gains.
The most popular ‘purchase’ by our entrants AstraZeneca rallied towards the finish line. The company showed that a series of controversies around its Covid-19 vaccine was not going to hold the business back. Its sales comfortably beat expectations, and as AstraZeneca has pleaded not to profit from the vaccine, potential problems on that front are unlikely to affect its financials. Its shares rose 4.3% on Friday but in the last three months has only shown a 3.0% rise.
The real winners over the three months of our FTSE 100 competition were the following:-
86 of the 100 shares made gains over the three months but the major losers were:-
This week the main movers were Lachlan Kelly up 23 places, Robert North up 20 places and Michael Riddell up 17. Downwards Keith3158 lost 37 places, Toobad 26 places and Douglas S 21 places.
Value wise in this the final week, Michael Riddell gained £1181, Robert North £1116 and Ginger Biscuit £979. Major loss was Alastair Durkie down £2648.
Sammy’s Butcher was next largest loss at £2485 which spectacularly took him into the wooden spoon position with a total loss of £5345 and long term tail ender Nil Pettigrew rose two places despite a £965 loss on the week.
And so to our prize winners. Needless to say they backed shares in the top six above.
In fourth place Cruella DeVille with a gain of £7299.
In third place Margaret Farquharson with a gain of £7328.
In second place Gavin Riddell with a gain of £7430
And the winner is
In first place Ginger Biscuit with a gain of £8955. (£44474 to £53429)
