DICK RICHARD'S TALK ON COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION

Dick Richards gave us a memorable talk that at times stirred emotional memories, on the background, history and current work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

He introduced us to the work of the founder, Sir Fabian Ware and illustrious supporters that included, among others, Rudyard Kipling and the garden designer Gertrude Jekell.

Initially established to manage the interment and appropriate memorial of those that that died in the Great War, the CWGC has become

a world wide organisation managing and looking after some 2,500 war cemeteries and graves in some 23,000 locations all over the world of the 1.7 million who died in commonwealth military and related service in the two world wars and a further 40,000 non-commonwealth graves.

Dick provided one or two anecdotes relating to local people and memorials in local churchyards and rekindled memories shared by some of our members.

He referred to the Brookwood war cemetery as a nearby example of the formal memorial but tranquil settings created by the Commission that has become perhaps the worlds largest gardener .
