Nickolas Reece talk about Turner and his paintings at Petworth
Talk given by Nicholas Reese to Midhurst and Petworth Rotary Club on Monday 8th February 2021.
Nicholas Reese is an art historian with a particular interest in the works of JMW Turner. He is secretary of the Turner Society.
His talk, illustrated with pictures, had the theme of Turner at Petworth.
The painter visited Petworth a number of times, staying at Petworth House - Turner was a friend of the owner, the Earl of Egremont.
The Earl welcomed lengthy visits by his guests, and provided Turner with a large room to use as a studio,
Turner had a prodigious output of paintings and drawings, including a significant number of Petworth House interiors and views of the estate.
Many of the locations he painted survive to this day. Nicholas showed how Turner developed his skill as an impressionist, using his brush strokes to convey the mood of the subject matter. Turner was equally adept at portraying light and shade, whether indoors or in the countryside.
Nicholas illustrated these themes with an excellent selection of slides.
Rotary members and guests applauded the speaker for such an interesting and informative presentation.
