Midhurst and Petworth Rotary Club Zoom Meeting – Monday 18th January 2021
The Clubs Zoom meeting on the 18th January 2021 welcomed our very own Dr Ian Goodall who gave a presentation on’ How Cells Work’.
Ian who gained degrees at London, Glasgow and Belfast Universities as well as the Open University was a headmaster at a comprehensive school and amongst other headmaster duties taught biology to ‘A’ level students.
Now retired from headmaster duties Ian’s presentation focused on cells within the human body and was accompanied by some very colourful and detailed illustrations to compliment the talk. It was an outstanding fact that there were in the order of 100 trillion cells in the human body, and the most cells were red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body. Ian explained other cells including sperm cells and nerve or neuron cells which accounted for 100 billion cells within the human body and send and receive signals from the brain to other organs within the body. He highlighted the workings of the Pancreas as well as the DNA structure within the body, which again were accompanied by some very colourful and detailed illustrations.
Following the presentation Ian answered some questions from attending members and concluded with a virtual round of applause for a very interesting and fascinating presentation.
