Tony Eginton, Chair of the Club’s International Committee, introduced Jessica by first explaining the purpose of the Rotary Global Scholarship programme.
The programme aims to further international understanding and peaceful relations among people of different races, nationalities, ethnicities, and religions while pursuing an approved programme of graduate study at an institution of higher education in a foreign country.
Jessica’s home town is Corpus Christi, Texas and is hosted in the UK by the Rotary Club of Hoddesdon. She gave an outline of her background which included an undergraduate degree in accounting with a spell as an auditor in the USA before serving overseas in the Peace Corps as a Community Economic Development volunteer.
The Peace Corps experience fuelled a passion for Health and how it affects marginalised communities. This lead to her seeking a Rotary Global Scholarship through The Rotary Club of Corpus Christi to enable her to study Global Health and Development at University College London. Jessica spoke about the selection process she experienced and her appreciation of the support the Rotary movement worldwide provided in enabling her to contribute to international development and community support in developing countries in her future career.
