The Mayflower

Talk by George English

Prestwick Rotarians were treated via Zoom to an excellent talk from Kilmarnock Rotarian George English, who is a direct descendant of someone who sailed in The Mayflower - as are 35m others. The Mayflower sailed from Plymouth in 1620 with 102 passengers.

It took 66 days to reach New York, and only 53 passengers survived the journey. Of these only half then survived the first winter. Despite these hardships, the community in New England prospered, especially after a peace accord was agreed with the local Wampanong Indians.

George English expanded his talk to outline the situation in Europe around that time, to emphasise the impact that the Mayflower sailing has, even today. Debby Broughton-Hay offered a well-deserved vote of thanks.
