The Curse of Alcoholism

At a recent meeting of Llandudno Rotary, 15 Members heard from one of their own, Rtn. Alan Guinn, of the heartbreaking and yet incredibly rewarding experience of helping alcoholics to face their demons

Alan, who graduated from Leeds University in the 1960’s. was moved to join some of his more senior fellow students in offering practical help and support to people who had succumbed to alcohol to the extent that their lives were out of control and disintegrating

Alan gave three anonymised stories of victims that between them outlned the various ways in which alcohol can destory a life through loss of anything from job, friends, family - and life itself;  one of the three had died in Alan’s arms

Alan stressed that right along the North Wales coast most towns hosted a self-help group and that the positive side of things is that there are thousands of people who have stared over the abyss before managing to turn their lives round, with the help of people who have trodden that hard path themselves. Secretary Garth Mann thanked Alan on behalf of the members, not just for giving the talk but for all that he had done to help others in this area, over the years
